DAY 20: Saturday, June 20 — The Valley of the Shadow June 20, 2026

Day 20 — The Companion in the Valley

Good morning, and welcome to today’s Pathway of Faith devotional.

Our scripture today comes from Psalm chapter 23, verse 4.

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Take a moment and let those words settle into your heart.

One of the most difficult things about walking through a valley is not the darkness itself.

It is the feeling of being alone.

When life becomes heavy, the enemy often whispers that no one understands what you are carrying. He wants you to believe that your burden is unique, that your struggle is invisible, and that somehow God has stepped away and left you to face it on your own.

Fear thrives in that kind of isolation.

It takes every concern and magnifies it.

A bill becomes a mountain.

A medical report becomes a source of panic.

A family conflict becomes something that feels impossible to overcome.

But in the middle of this valley, David speaks one of the most comforting truths found in all of Scripture.

“For thou art with me.”

Notice something beautiful about this psalm.

When David speaks about the green pastures and the still waters, he talks about God.

“He maketh me to lie down.”

“He leadeth me beside the still waters.”

But when David enters the valley, his language changes.

He is no longer speaking about God.

He is speaking directly to God.

“For thou art with me.”

The valley changed the conversation.

What was once knowledge became relationship.

What was once theology became personal experience.

And sometimes God uses the difficult places in life to draw us closer to Himself than we have ever been before.

The shadow may be dark, but remember this:

A shadow can only exist when there is a light nearby.

The presence of the shadow is evidence that the Light has not disappeared.

Jesus is still with you.

His rod is there to protect you.

His staff is there to guide you.

His hand is there to steady your steps.

And perhaps the most encouraging truth of all is this:

You are walking through the valley.

You are not living there.

You are not building a home there.

You are not staying there forever.

God is leading you through it, one step at a time.

Today’s Pathway Step:

If a shadow of worry tries to enter your thoughts today, immediately turn your attention away from the problem and toward the Savior.

Instead of speaking about the burden, speak directly to the One who carries it with you.

Remind yourself:

“I am not alone in this room. The Lord is right here with me.”

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus, thank You for walking beside me through every valley.

Thank You that You never abandon me when the path becomes difficult and the room grows dark.

Today I refuse to surrender to fear because I know You are with me.

Thank You for Your protective rod and Your guiding staff.

Thank You for defending me when I am weak and directing me when I cannot see the way ahead.

Fill my heart with the comfort of Your presence and give me the courage to take the next step in faith.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Thank you for joining today’s Pathway of Faith devotional.

May the Lord bless you, strengthen you, and remind you throughout this day that you never walk alone. The Shepherd is with you, and He is leading you safely through the valley.
