Love That Gives Life

Devotional

Sometimes we think of God’s love only as something that comforts us when life becomes difficult. And it certainly does. There are days when simply knowing that we are loved by God gives us the strength to take another step.

But God’s love does even more.

It gives life.

Paul reminds us that we were not simply people who needed a little encouragement or a better direction. We were spiritually dead in our sins. Yet two powerful words change everything:

But God.

God, who is rich in mercy, did what we could never do for ourselves. Because of His great love, He made us alive together with Christ.

This is the wonder of grace.

God’s love does not wait at a distance hoping we will somehow find our own way back to Him. Through Jesus Christ, He reaches into the brokenness of our lives and offers something entirely new.

New life.

I have learned that it can be easy to carry yesterday into today. We remember who we were, the mistakes we made, and the things we wish we could change. Sometimes we allow our past to tell us who we are, even after Christ has given us a new identity.

But grace tells a different story.

If you belong to Christ, your past may be part of your testimony, but it no longer has the authority to define you. God’s love has given you something your past could never take away—new life in Jesus Christ.

You are not simply an improved version of who you used to be.

You have been made alive with Christ.

Reflection

Are you still allowing something from your past to define who you believe you are today?

Take a moment to remember that God’s grace is greater than your past, and His love has given you a new life in Christ.

Pathway Step

Today, identify one label from your past that you have continued to carry—something you have done, something someone has called you, or something you have believed about yourself.

Bring that label before the Lord and replace it with the truth of Ephesians 2:4–5.

Then live differently because of that truth. Take one step today that reflects the new life Christ has given you—offer forgiveness, make peace where you can, encourage someone who is struggling, or simply walk forward without allowing yesterday to pull you backward.

Your past may explain where you have been, but Christ determines where you are going.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being rich in mercy and for loving me with a great love. Thank You that through Your grace You have made me alive with Christ. Help me to stop allowing my past to define the life You have redeemed. Teach me to walk today as someone who has been given new life, trusting Your grace with every step I take.

Tomorrow we will see how the kindness and love of God reached us—not because of anything we had done, but according to His mercy.

Yesterday does not have the final word over your life. Jesus does. Whatever road brought you to this moment, God’s grace is sufficient, His mercy is rich, and His love is greater. You have been made alive with Christ.
