Anchor Scripture (KJV)
βLet your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.β
β Colossians 4:6 (KJV)
Devotional
Words can stay with us for a very long time.
Most of us can remember something encouraging someone said years ago. We may also remember words that wounded us long after the person who spoke them had forgotten.
That is the power carried by something as ordinary as a conversation.
Paul tells us, βLet your speech be alway with grace.β
That is a challenging instruction.
It is easy to speak graciously when we agree with someone, when we are rested, or when the conversation is pleasant. The greater test comes when we are frustrated, misunderstood, criticized, or speaking with someone whose opinions are very different from our own.
Those moments reveal something about our walk with Christ.
Jesus never surrendered truth in order to be kind. But neither did He need cruelty to make truth powerful.
Grace and truth belong together.
Today we live in a world where harsh words travel quickly. People speak to one another in ways they might never speak face to face. Disagreement easily becomes insult, and frustration can become anger before we have considered the damage our words may cause.
A follower of Christ should sound different.
That does not mean we never disagree. It does not mean remaining silent when something needs to be said.
It means remembering that the person standing across from us is still someone Christ calls us to love.
Sometimes walking in love means speaking.
Sometimes it means listening.
And sometimes it means deciding that the words forming in our mind do not need to leave our mouth.
A gracious word can calm an argument. An encouraging word can strengthen someone who is ready to give up. A sincere apology can begin healing a wounded relationship.
Our words cannot save anyone.
But they can point toward the One who can.
Reflection
What do your words reveal about your walk with Christ?
When you are frustrated or disagree with someone, do your words still carry grace?
Is there someone who needs an encouraging word from you today?
Pathway Step
Before speaking today, especially when you are frustrated, give yourself one moment to ask:
Will these words reflect Christ?
If correction is needed, speak truth with grace. If someone is discouraged, deliberately encourage them. If you have spoken harshly to someone, humble yourself and apologize.
And if the words you are about to speak will only wound, embarrass, or tear someone down, choose silence instead.
Let at least one person hear something today that leaves them stronger because they crossed your pathway.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the grace You continually show me. Help that grace become visible in the words I speak.
Guard my tongue when I am frustrated. Give me wisdom when truth needs to be spoken, humility when I need to apologize, and compassion when someone needs encouragement.
Let my words build rather than destroy, heal rather than wound, and point others toward Jesus Christ.
In Jesusβ name,
Amen.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow we will consider what it means to walk with patience when people, circumstances, and even our own plans test us.
Closing Encouragement
You will speak many words today.
Some may be forgotten almost immediately.
Others may remain in someone’s heart far longer than you realize.
Choose them carefully.
Let your words carry grace, offer hope, and leave behind evidence that you are walking with Christ.
