Love That Begins with God

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Devotional

We often think love begins with us.

We choose someone to love. We decide to show kindness. We reach out to someone who is hurting. We forgive, encourage, and care for one another.

But before any of that, there was God.

Love begins with Him.

John tells us something remarkable: “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us.”

Before we ever knew how to love Him, He loved us.

Before we ever reached toward Him, He reached toward us through Jesus Christ.

Everything we have discovered this week leads us here. God loved us first. He proved His love at the cross. His love gave us new life. His mercy saved us by grace.

And now that love begins to change the way we see one another.

I have found that loving people is easy when they are easy to love. The real challenge comes when someone disappoints us, misunderstands us, or simply sees the world differently than we do.

Those are the moments when we discover whether love is merely something we feel or something Christ is producing within us.

John does not tell us to love one another because everyone will deserve it. He points us back to the love we ourselves have received.

“Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”

The love of God was never meant to stop when it reached our hearts.

It was meant to flow through us.

The person God places before you today may never know the struggles you have faced or the lessons the Lord has taught you. But they can experience something of Christ through the patience you show, the grace you extend, the kindness you offer, and the forgiveness you choose.

We love because God loved us first.

And sometimes the clearest way another person will see that love is through the way we choose to love them.

Reflection

Is there someone in your life whom you find difficult to love?

Before thinking about what they have done, pause and remember the love and mercy God has shown you.

How might remembering His love change the way you respond to that person today?

Pathway Step

Today, choose to love someone when it would be easier not to.

Maybe it means speaking kindly instead of responding harshly. Perhaps it means listening before judging, forgiving an offense, encouraging someone who feels forgotten, or reaching out to someone you have been avoiding.

Do one intentional act of love today without expecting recognition or anything in return.

Let someone encounter a glimpse of the love of Christ through you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me first. Thank You for showing Your love through Jesus Christ and for giving me a love I could never earn. Teach me to love others from the abundance of the love You have given me. Give me patience when loving is difficult, grace when I have been hurt, and compassion for those who need to know that they are not forgotten.

Let the love of Christ be seen in me today.

Closing Encouragement

You do not have to create the love God asks you to give.

You have already received it from Him.

Let His love fill your heart today, and then allow it to overflow into the lives of those around you. One word of kindness, one act of grace, or one moment of forgiveness may become the very place where someone catches a glimpse of Christ.

You were loved first.

Now walk forward and love in His name.
