“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.” — Proverbs 25:11
Words have the power to leave lasting marks upon the heart.
A careless word can discourage someone for years. A harsh word can damage a relationship. Yet a kind, timely word spoken with love can lift a weary spirit and remind someone they are not alone.
Solomon paints a beautiful picture when he writes, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”
The value is not only in the words themselves, but in speaking them at the right time and in the right spirit.
The “apples of gold” remind us that encouraging words are precious. In a world filled with criticism, anger, and endless opinions, genuine kindness has become increasingly rare. A simple word of encouragement may be exactly what someone needs to keep moving forward.
The “pictures of silver” remind us that truth should always be delivered with grace. Even when difficult things must be said, our tone should reflect the love of Christ. Truth spoken without love often wounds, but truth wrapped in humility and compassion has the power to heal.
As followers of Christ, our words should point people toward hope rather than despair, toward peace rather than conflict, and toward the Savior rather than ourselves.
Before speaking today, ask yourself a simple question:
Will these words reflect the heart of Christ?
If they will, speak them with confidence.
If they will not, ask the Lord to shape your heart before they leave your lips.
Reflection
Think about someone who encouraged you with just the right words at just the right time. How might God use your words today to strengthen someone who is quietly carrying a burden?

Ask the Lord to place one person on your heart today. Reach out with a kind word, a note of encouragement, a phone call, or a sincere prayer. You may never know how greatly your words are needed.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of words. Help me to use them wisely, graciously, and with love. Guard my tongue from careless speech and fill my heart with compassion for others. May every word I speak bring honor to You and encouragement to those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
