Day 16 — The Anchor Beneath the Waves
Good morning, and welcome to today’s Pathway of Faith devotional.
Our scripture today comes from Psalm chapter 42, verse 7.
“Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.”
Those words paint a powerful picture.
The writer of this psalm does not pretend that life is easy.
He does not hide his pain.
He openly admits that the waves and billows have rolled completely over him.
Perhaps you know exactly what that feels like.
When you are walking through an exhausting season, it can feel as though you are being completely submerged by the weight of life.
The struggle is no longer just something happening around you.
It begins to feel like an internal flood.
A flood that threatens your joy.
A flood that challenges your strength.
A flood that tries to shake your sense of identity.
In those moments, it can feel as though the waters will never stop rising.
But hidden within this verse is a beautiful mystery.
“Deep calleth unto deep.”
Think about those words.
The deep places of your life are calling out to the deep places of God.
The valleys you face are not designed to destroy you.
They are designed to draw you into a deeper encounter with your Heavenly Father.
Surface-level faith cannot sustain a soul through seasons of heavy grief.
Surface-level prayers cannot carry us through long periods of disappointment.
Difficult seasons have a way of driving our roots deeper into God’s presence.
When everything feels secure, it is easy to remain near the surface.
But when the waves begin to rise, we discover how desperately we need Him.
Perhaps today you feel as though your hand is reaching into the darkness and closing on nothing.
If that is where you are, take heart.
God is inviting your spirit to drop its anchor deeper than ever before.
The depth of your trial is calling out to the boundless depth of His mercy.
The depth of your weakness is calling out to the depth of His strength.
The depth of your need is calling out to the depth of His grace.
You are not drowning.
You are being anchored.
God is securing your soul in a place where the superficial storms of this world can no longer shake your foundation.
The waves may still crash above you.
The wind may still howl around you.
But beneath the surface, your anchor is holding fast.
And that anchor is Christ.
Today’s Pathway Step:
Find five minutes of complete silence today.
Turn off the noise of the world.
Set aside your distractions.
Close your eyes and rest quietly in the unshakable depth of God’s presence.
As you do, declare these words aloud:
“The storm is loud, but my anchor is deep.”
Say it again.
“The storm is loud, but my anchor is deep.”
Let that truth settle into your heart.
Let us pray.
Lord Jesus, when the waves of life feel as though they are rolling over my head, steady my soul.
Thank You that this present struggle is drawing me closer to Your heart.
Thank You that Your mercy is deeper than my pain and Your love is stronger than my fear.
Today I stop fighting the currents in my own strength.
I choose instead to rest in Your deep and unchanging love for me.
Hold me secure in the hidden place.
Anchor my heart in Your truth.
And remind me that no storm can separate me from Your care.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Thank you for joining today’s Pathway of Faith devotional.
May the Lord anchor your soul today, strengthen your faith, and remind you that while the storm may be loud, your anchor in Christ is deeper still.
