Looking Over Someone Else’s Fence
Anchor Scripture (KJV)
“Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him… what is that to thee? follow thou me.” — John 21:21–22
It is easy to become distracted by someone else’s life.
We see another person’s success and wonder why our own journey seems harder.
We see someone else’s blessings and quietly ask, “Lord, why not me?”
Comparison has a way of stealing contentment before we even realize it.
Peter understood that temptation.
After Jesus restored him, Peter looked at John and asked, “Lord, what shall this man do?”
Jesus’ answer was simple and direct:
“What is that to thee? Follow thou me.”
In other words, Peter, don’t become so concerned with someone else’s calling that you neglect your own.
God has never asked us to compare our journey with another believer’s.
He has called each of us to faithfully follow Christ where He has placed us.
Some will travel through seasons of abundance.
Others will walk through valleys of hardship.
Some will serve quietly, unseen by the world.
Others may stand before many people.
None of those things determine God’s love or His faithfulness.
The measure of a successful Christian life is not how it compares with someone else’s.
The measure is whether we are faithfully following Jesus.
If comparison has stolen your joy, lift your eyes from your neighbor’s path and place them back on Christ.
The Lord who guides your life has not forgotten you.
His plan for you has never depended upon someone else’s blessings.
It has always depended upon His perfect wisdom and His unfailing love.
Reflection
Have you been measuring your life against someone else’s? How might your outlook change if you focused less on another person’s journey and more on faithfully following Christ where He has placed you?
Pathway Step
Today, thank God for one blessing He has given specifically to you. Then pray for someone else’s success without comparing it to your own. Let gratitude replace comparison.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Forgive me for the times I have looked at someone else’s life instead of keeping my eyes upon Christ. Teach me to be content with the path You have chosen for me. Help me to rejoice with others, trust Your timing, and faithfully follow wherever You lead. Thank You for Your wisdom, Your provision, and Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Tomorrow we’ll consider how faithfulness in the ordinary moments of life prepares us for the greater things God has planned.

God did not create you to live someone else’s story. He lovingly wrote your own. Walk your pathway with confidence, keep your eyes on Christ, and remember His words: “Follow thou me.”
