Anchor Scripture (KJV)
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,”
— Philippians 3:13
Some wounds happened yesterday.
Others happened many years ago.
A painful childhood. The loss of someone we loved. Betrayal by someone we trusted. Words spoken over us that we never forgot. A relationship that ended badly. A failure we still replay when the room becomes quiet.
Time passes, but sometimes the hurt travels with us.
And when yesterday remains unresolved, it can begin speaking into today.
We may become guarded with people who never wounded us. We may expect rejection because someone once rejected us. We may carry anger into relationships that had nothing to do with the original hurt. We may even begin looking at life through the pain of what happened rather than through the hope of what Christ is doing now.
Paul said,
“…forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.”
He was not telling us to pretend the past never happened.
Some things should be remembered. Some losses will always matter. Some wounds leave scars.
But a scar is evidence of a wound that has begun to heal. It was never meant to remain an open wound forever.
There comes a time when we must stop allowing yesterday to determine how we live today.
That may require prayer.
It may require forgiveness.
It may require an honest conversation with someone we trust.
Sometimes it may mean allowing another mature believer, pastor, counselor, or trusted friend to walk beside us while healing takes place.
But whatever the pathway looks like, Christ does not call us to build our home in yesterday.
He calls us forward.
You cannot change what happened.
But through Christ, what happened does not have to control what happens next.
The past may explain part of your story.
It does not have the authority to write the ending.
Reflection
Is there an old hurt that still influences the way you respond to people today?
Are you protecting yourself from something that happened years ago while unintentionally keeping good people at a distance now?
Ask the Lord to show you whether yesterday’s pain has been given too much authority over today’s life.
Pathway Step
Bring one unresolved hurt honestly before the Lord today.
Do not minimize it, excuse it, or pretend it does not matter.
Simply pray:
“Lord, this happened to me, and it still hurts. Help me place it into Your hands so it no longer controls the way I live today.”
If that burden has become too heavy to carry alone, take another step and speak with a trusted Christian who can listen, pray, and walk beside you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
You know every part of my story, including the places that still hurt.
Help me not to live imprisoned by things I cannot change. Heal the wounds I have carried too long, soften the places where pain has made my heart hard, and teach me to trust You with what happened yesterday.
Give me grace to forgive where forgiveness is needed, courage to seek help when I need it, and faith to reach toward what You still have ahead of me.
Help me walk forward with Jesus Christ rather than allowing the past to continually pull me backward.
In His precious name I pray,
Amen.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow we will continue learning what it means to walk forward with Christ without allowing yesterday to govern today.
Closing Encouragement
Your past is part of your story, but it does not have to become your prison.
Christ knows every wound, every disappointment, and every tear. Place yesterday into His hands and reach forward in faith.
There is still life ahead. There is still healing ahead. And Jesus is already ther
